Should I replace my solar?

Should I replace or upgrade my solar system?

It’s a good question. Technology has advanced dramatically in the past few years and your roof space is limited. Even though the solar panels on your roof may have plenty of life left in them, it might make more sense to replace them with more powerful ones.

How do I know if I’m a good candidate to replace my current solar system?

If you have maxed out your current roof space with solar and still have an electric bill, the answer is yes. If your solar system is over 5 years old the answer could be yes. Have you recently purchased an electric vehicle or plan to?  What you are able to produce with your limited roof space and what new electrical needs you plan to take on will help answer this question.

What happens to my perfectly good solar panels if I end up replacing my system?

You can get a tax write off by donating them to a non-profit. Solar panels in good working condition but with older technology can still be used in developing countries where roof space isn’t limited. So you get the added benefit of paying it forward as well.

What if I have a solar lease or loan?

Unfortunately, if you have a current solar lease or loan you are not a great candidate for replacing your solar system.

What size solar panel is a good candidate for replacing?

As you can imagine, solar panels have continued to become more efficient and have even changed size and shape. If you have solar panels that are less than 300 watts each, we should talk. Today’s solar panels can be anywhere from 400+ watts per panel.

I have plenty of roof space, should I replace or simply add on?

Great question. If you have plenty of roof space, you should simply add on. The main thing is that you are able to produce as much electricity for your home as you need. If roof space is not an issue, by all means, hang on to the older system and simply expand with a newer, more efficient technology.
